FLOYD LESTER ATKINS SR.

   Floyd ``Les'' Atkins Sr., 79, of 73 Hobson St., died July 24, 1994, in 
Maryview Medical Center.
   He was born in Kentucky, Sept. 20, 1914, and was educated in the public 
schools of Gary, Ind. He held a bachelor's degree from Virginia Union 
University and a master's degree in guidance and psychology from Virginia 
State University. While at Virginia Union, he was a member of the 1939 CIAA 
Basketball ``Dream Team.''
   Mr. Atkins was a member and trustee at Emanuel AME Church. He was director 
of guidance at Crestwood High School and retired as principal from 
Southwestern Elementary School. He was a member of the Elementary Principal's 
Association and served as its former chairman. He was also a member of 
Chesapeake Retired Teacher's Association, a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi 
Fraternity, a member of the Virginia Union University Alumni Association, and 
a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge Doric (NU)98. Mr. Atkins was a 
veteran of World War II, where he served in the European theater. He held 
membership in the Chesterfield Civic Club and was a former member and 
volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Suicide Crisis Center. He was a life member 
of the Chesapeake Parent Teacher Association and a former member of the board 
of The Boy Scouts of America. Early in his career he served as supervisor of 
recreation for the city of Portsmouth.
   Mr. Atkins was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He leaves to 
cherish his memory a devoted wife of 52 years, Edna F. Atkins; a son, Floyd L.
Atkins Jr., M.D. of Boston; a daughter, Margery B.A. Scott, M.D., of Virginia 
Beach; a daughter-in-law, Joyce B. Atkins; and a son-in-law, Thomas H. Scott 
Jr., M.D. He also leaves three grandchildren, G. Brandon Atkins of 
Philadelphia, Thomas H. Scott III and Kimberly Atkins Scott, both of Virginia 
Beach. He also leaves one aunt, Pauline Hudson of Gary, Ind.; a sister-in-law,
Doris F. James of New Haven, Conn.; and a god-child, Olivia Bond of 
Washington, D.C.
   Funeral services will be conducted at Emanuel AME Church on Thursday, July 
28, 1994, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. James Mason. Burial will be in Lincoln 
Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Viewing will begin at 6p.m. today at 
Corprew Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, July
27, from 7 to 8 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at noon Thursday.
