YOUNGSTERS TO COMPETE IN STATE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Virginia State Tennis Association Boys and Girls Championships are coming to the Beach. From Aug. 9-12, youngsters in three age divisions will vie for state titles at Princess Anne Country Club and Owl's Creek Tennis Center.

Competitors in the 16-under group will play at the Princess Anne Country Club, located at Atlantic Avenue and Sea Pines Road at the Oceanfront. The 18-under and 14-under will compete at Owls Creek, the city's facility at General Booth Boulevard and Birdneck Road.

Singles and doubles champions will be crowned.

Mike Miller, head tennis professionnal at Princess Anne and tournament co-director, expects about 32 boys and 28 girls in the 16-under division to begin match play in the open draw tournament.

``We will have a feed-in consolation system until the semi-final round, so everyone will play at least two matches,'' he said.

Miller and tournament co-director Connie Bolling are pleased to be hosting all age groups at the Beach.

``It all depends upon the bids, of course, but it's nice to have all the matches being held within a 10-minute drive,'' Miller said.

Last year, the 18-under finals were played in Roanoke; with 14s and 16s in Virginia Beach.

``It's a lot easier for parents if they have more than one child involved,'' said Bolling.

She expects about 120 players in the two divisions at Owls Creek.

``Probably 90 percent of the players will be working on their state and Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association computer rankings,'' Bolling said.

There will be five or six trophies presented in each of the draws.
