SUSPECT KILLS HIMSELF

A 30-year-old man, whom police wanted to question about a rape, ran away from a detective Monday and fatally shot himself in the head.

The man's identity was not released because the shooting is considered a suicide and because police do not identify criminal suspects, police spokesman Mike Carey said.

Carey said a detective went to the man's home in the 3100 block of Arctic Ave. about 10 a.m. with questions about a rape that occurred Sunday. The man wasn't home.

As the detective was leaving, the suspect returned but fled when the detective approached and identified himself.

The suspect sprinted into an alley, pulled a handgun and shot himself in the head, Carey said. The detective, whose name was not released, was not injured.
