CASH LEADS TO ARREST

Police arrested a Hampton man on drug charges after a parcel service found a poorly wrapped package containing $21,000 in cash.

United Parcel Service officials alerted police about the package.

When a drug-sniffing dog reacted to the package, police asked UPS to trace it to the sender.

William Hall Jr., 41, was arrested Friday at his home, Newport News police spokesman Bill Roth said. Hall was charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

There were no drugs in the package, but it apparently had been near drugs because the dog signaled that it smelled drugs, Roth said.

A search of Hall's home netted about $500 worth of marijuana. Hall later told police he was sending the money to marijuana suppliers in Texas, Roth said.

Hall's son, Michael Salvato, also was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Father and son were released on bond Saturday.
