TIMOTHY R. WELLS SR.

Mr. Timothy R. Wells Sr., of Norfolk, died at Lake Taylor Hospital on Aug. 6, 1994.

Before his retirement in 1970, Mr. Wells was a professor of biology and chemistry at Norfolk State University. He began teaching at Norfolk State in 1944.

Before coming to Norfolk State, he taught at Jackson State University, Jackson, Mich.; Texas College, Tyler, Texas; Bennett College, Greensboro, N.C.; Elizabeth City State College, Elizabeth City, N.C.; St. Augustines College, Raleigh, N.C.; and Virginia State University, Petersburg, Va. After his retirement, he was a lecturer at St. Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Va.

Mr. Wells received a B.S. in chemistry from Virginia Union University in 1927. He continued his education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., and received a master's degree in science education from Columbia University in 1932. He also attended Cornell University for additional graduate studies in the biological sciences.

Mr. Wells was one of the oldest living African-American Navy veterans of World War I. He entered the Navy at age 16 and earned the rank of chief warrant officer before he was discharged at age 18 at the end of the war.

As a child, Mr. Wells was a member of the Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk. For 48 years, he was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Norfolk, where he served on the vestry.

Mr. Wells was the son of the late James and Fannie Wells of Norfolk. His survivors include his wife, Hortense (Rollins) Wells; two sons, Timothy R. Jr. of Newton, Mass., and Arthur C. of Norfolk; two granddaughters, Kristin D. of Washington, D.C., and Patricia A. of Newton, Mass.; three stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will be at Riddick Funeral Service on Norview Avenue in Norfolk on Friday, Aug. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service given by Mr. Wells' fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, will begin at 6 p.m. His funeral will be at Grace Episcopal Church in Norfolk at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Burial will immediately follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park in Chesapeake.
