ABC BOARD SECRETARY FIRED AFTER 41-YEAR CAREER

Alcoholic Beverage Control Board Secretary Robert N. Swinson has been fired after a 41-year career with the board.

Swinson was promoted to board secretary, a political post, in 1987. Since changes made in ABC laws during the Robb administration, secretaries have served at the pleasure of the three board members.

``I think they just wanted to get my body out and get somebody else's body in there,'' Swinson said Thursday.

The board has had only four secretaries since it was established in 1934. Swinson was the first to be fired.

The elimination of the middle-level manager's job is the latest in a series of layoffs in the ABC Department and the rest of state government. Republican Gov. George F. Allen's administration has been reducing the size of state government by cutting workers it deems unnecessary.

In the spring, the Allen-appointed ABC Board eliminated the jobs of the liquor-control department's three deputy directors. About the same time, it also axed the seven-employee internal auditing section. by CNB
