BERT H. HORNSTEIN

Bert H. Hornstein, 69, of Crawford Parkway, died August 13, 1994, in Norfolk.

He was a native of Portsmouth and was the son of the late Leon and Sophia Jacobson Hornstein. He had retired as the chairman of Littman's, Inc., in Norfolk. He was a member of Gomley Chesed Synagogue. He was instrumental in organizing the Tidewater Chapter of the Kidney Foundation, as well as being a trustee of Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia, the president of the Portsmouth Jewish Federation, a board member of the Tidewater United Jewish Federation, and a Navy veteran of World War II. He had attended VPI and the University of North Carolina before receiving his Navy commission in World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Estelle K. Hornstein; two daughters, Dr. Lee H. Walters of New York, and Martha H. Kline of Norfolk; two sons, Steven M. Hornstein of Portsmouth, and Donald N. Hornstein of Norfolk; one sister, Barbara L. Breit of Portsmouth; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Gomley Chesed Synagogue by Rabbi Israel Bornstein and Rabbi Lawrence Forman. Burial will be in Gomley Chesed Cemetery. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd., is handling the arrangements. The family will be at (NU)1 Crawford Parkway, Portsmouth. Contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Hornstein Camp Fund, c/o the Tidewater Jewish Foundation.
