Garland Dallas ``Mutt'' Barnes Sr., 79, a lifelong resident of Severn, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1994, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
He was a founder and retired president of Severn Peanut Company and the Meherrin Agricultural & Chemical Company. He was a member and former deacon of Severn Baptist Church. He also served as trustee, choir member and as treasurer of the church for over 25 years. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was a staff sergeant, Company A, 1341st Engineers. While serving in the Asiatic Pacific theater, he received a Presidential Unit Citation, an Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal.
He served as past president of the North Carolina Foundation Seed Producers, was past chairman of the North Carolina/Virginia Peanut Advisory Committee, was a former member of the Severn-Pendleton Ruritan Club, a charter member and served on the original board of directors of Valley Pine Country Club, Lasker, N.C, and served on the board of directors of Pine Forest Rest Home, Potecasi, N.C.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Prince Barnes; two daughters, Nancy Prince Barnes of Raleigh, N.C., and Paige B. Pinnix of Severn; a son, Garland Dallas Barnes Jr. of Handsom, Va.; son-in-law, Edward H. Pinnix Jr.; daughter-in-law, Patricia S. Barnes; and eight grandchildren. He was brother of the late Mildred Barnes McGee and Howard G. Barnes and son of the late George Dallas and Nita Britt Barnes.
A funeral service will be held in Severn Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial with military honors will be in Severn Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the George D. Barnes Trust Fund, c/o Severn Baptist Church, Mrs. Ann Barnes, Severn, N.C. 27877. The family will be at the residence, Watson St., Severn. Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins Chapel, is handling arrangements.
