MARY D. WILSON

Mary Dillard Wilson, 87, of the 24300 block of Lincoln Drive, a retired schoolteacher, died Aug. 13, 1994, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Southampton County, Va., and was retired from the Southampton County Public School System after 39 years. She was the widow of Captain Causey Wilson.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of First Baptist Church, Courtland, where she was a Deaconess, Missionary and member of the Martin Luther King Gospel Choir, Church Clerk, Choir member, schoolteacher and served in other capacities over the years. She was a member of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission, Voters League, National Council of Negro Women Inc., Good Samaritans, Daughters of Samaria Sunlight Lodge, NAACP and Southampton Leadership Council. She was the recipient of many plaques and certificates from various organizations, including the Virginia Teachers Association, Grand Lodge (NU)6, Omega Psi Phi Sorority, Bethany Baptist Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Survivors include four stepdaughters, Ashley Richardson of Detroit, Jessie Smith and Lucy R. Johnson, both of Wilmington, Del., and Edna Darden of Courtland; a son, James M. Wilson of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a brother, Rufus Dillard of Portsmouth; a grandson, Rodney M. Wilson of West Bloomfield, Mich.; 16 stepgrandchildren; 20 stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, devoted neighbors and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, Courtland, by the Rev. Charles R. Barnes. Burial will be in Helping Hand Cemetery, Courtland. A Christian wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today in First Baptist Church. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday. The family will assemble at the residence at 12:45 p.m. Thursday for the procession to the church. Engram Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
