IVERSON A HALF CREDIT FROM HIGH SCHOOL DEGREE

Georgetown University basketball recruit Allen Iverson has not completed his high school coursework, but could do so in time to enroll at Georgetown this fall, two sources said this week. Iverson has ``half a credit'' remaining to obtain his high school diploma at Richard Milburn High School, a private institution in Hampton, according to Milburn president Robert Crosby.

That information was confirmed Wednesday by Gary Moore, the director of purchasing at Hampton University whom Iverson lived with for three months during Iverson's sophomore year in high school.

``He just has to complete that one course,'' Crosby said Wednesday.

Crosby also was quoted in yesterday's edition of the Georgetown Voice, a weekly independent campus publication.

``It could be a matter of a week or two or it could be a month or two,'' the Voice quoted Crosby as saying. ``The only thing I can say for certain is that he is very close to completing his requirements.''

Georgetown began classes Wednesday, but late registration will not end until Sept. 7. Iverson could enroll at Georgetown next week and be eligible to play right away; or he could enroll and not play until the second semester, or next season, if he chooses. To be eligible to play this year, Iverson would have to have scored at least 700 on the Scholastic Assessment Test or at least 17 on the American College Test. The results of these tests have not been made public.

Iverson, a 6-foot-1 point guard who played at Bethel High, spent four months in prison after being convicted in July 1993 of three felony counts of maiming by mob for his part in a bowling-alley altercation. He was granted conditional clemency by then-Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder in December and enrolled at Milburn. ILLUSTRATION: Photo

had a 700 on the SAT, he'd be set to play.
