SAFETY RECORD SHOWS UNION CAMP DOES CARE

I was distressed to read the Sept. 8 letter alleging that Union Camp Corp. disregards the safety of its employees and the rest of our community.

Readers of The Sun should be aware that the Franklin mill just attained an all-time record for employee safety, 1.8 million manhours without a lost workday case. Recent Pulp and Paper Safety Association statistics rated the mill in the top eight of all forest-products operations of comparable size for the first six months of 1994.

The Franklin mill is quite proud of its safety performance; and while not perfect, it continues to work diligently to improve it through departmental and other safety teams.

It is true that there are times when some employees are required to work beyond the normal eight-hour shift. This is a fact of life operating a 24-hour/day 7-day/week business. The mill is sensitive to the health aspects of working long hours and has, with employee groups, addressed many of these issues.

As a 22-year employee of Union Camp, I can say without reservation that the company has always had a sincere concern for the well-being of its employees and neighboring communities. Our actions reflect our concern. This is a source of pride for all Union Camp employees.
