BASIC LESSON IN CONSERVATISM

William F. Smith (letter, Sept. 6) was indignant over ``Conservative Lies.'' I'll tell you what conservatives really believe:

Personal responsibility, taking care of your own, including yourself, without handouts; controlling such animal desires as drug addiction, alcoholism, gluttony and sexual license; meeting civic responsibilities, such as voting and joining in charity drives, seeing that the family gets religious instruction, trying to foster good practices for the environment, for schools and for government.

It means providing an adequate defense for our country and serving when called; truly limited government instead of our current slavery to a power elite in Washington.

It means that when people earn something, they keep it - not have it taken by the power elite to create a class of people with no values, no standards, no morals, and no compassion - just hungry mouths and grasping hands!
