ASSEMBLY SHOULD ABOLISH PAROLE NOW

Under Gov. Allen's leadership, Virginia has finally moved forward to fight rising violent crime rates. As last year's elections demonstrates, his proposal to abolish parole and restructure sentences enjoys the support of a strong majority of Virginians, and this comprehensive anti-crime plan deserves passage by the General Assembly.

Gov. Allen has fashioned a crime package based on protecting Virginians by punishing criminals. His plan to abolish parole will mandate that criminals spend significantly more time in prison - in fact, some increases in time served will climb by 700 percent. Criminals behind bars are unable to conduct crimnal activity in our communities and, as a result, Virginia will be safer.

The strategy is clear: longer prison time for criminals, especially the most violent repeat offenders. Virginians have voiced their support for abolishing parole, and I hope the General Assembly will do it. Now.
