FORMER DEFENSE SECRETARY CHENEY ENDORSES JONES

Former Defense Secretary Richard Cheney has endorsed Walter B. Jones Jr., the Republican 3rd District congressional candidate in the November elections.

In a Sept. 15 statement, Cheney - President Bush's defense secretary during the Gulf War - said Jones Jr., is a ``top conservative who has dedicated his life to public service.''

Cheney is the latest GOP heavyweight to come out in support of Jones, a former Democrat and son of the late Walter B. Jones Sr., who served 12-terms as a Democratic representative from the old 1st District. Sen. Jesse Helms, leader of the Republican right in the U.S. Senate, came to Elizabeth City recently to campaign for Jones.

In 1992 elections, Rep. Eva Clayton, D-Warren, became the 1st African-American and the first woman to go to Congress from N.C. in this century. She ran successfully in the new 1st District set up by congressional redistricting.

Rather than run against Clayton, the younger Jones chose to campaign as a Republican against incumbent Rep. H. Martin Lancaster, D-Goldsboro, in the 3rd District this year.
