LOSSES SCRAMBLE ODAC PRESEASON FOOTBALL PICTURE

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference football race isn't running according to form. Only Emory & Henry (2-0), picked by conferece coaches to finish third in a preseason poll, is off to a promising start and now must be considered the favorite. . . . Randolph-Macon, the defending champion and No. 1 pick, dropped its opener to Catholic, 25-18, while Hampden-Sydney, the second selection, is 0-2. . . . E&H guard Kevin Rogers is the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week. He helped anchor a line that racked up 488 yards in total offense in a 47-6 rout of Bridgewater. He also picked up a fumble and ran it for a touchdown.

CIAA NOTES: The 14 schools in the CIAA received $50,000 each from proceeds of the conference basketball tournament, held in Winston-Salem, N.C., last February, conference commissioner Leon Kerry said. . . . Which is Richmond's finest basketball team - Division 1 Virginia Commonwealth or Division II Virginia Union? The answer is coming. VCU has agreed to play the CIAA power on Jan. 21 at the Richmond Coliseum. Win or lose, It'll be a big payday for Dave Robbins' Panthers.

FIELD HOCKEY: After a 3-0 victory over second-ranked Northwestern and a tough loss to No. 1 North Carolina, Old Dominion has jumped from eighth to fourth in this week's NCAA Division I poll. James Madison (4-0-1), tied for No. 2 last week, now has sole possession of the second spot. . . . Senior Sue Callahan, a Princess Anne grad, will lead the Lady Monarchs against 20th-ranked Maryland on Saturday and No. 12 Virginia on Sunday. Both games are at 1 p.m. at Foreman Field. Callahan, an All-American last year, is ODU's second-leading scorer with 10 points after six games. . . . Virginia coach Melissa Sanders gives sophomore Heather Hale and Kelly Hood high marks. ``Hale and Hood are extremely strong defenders,'' Sanders said. Both started all 18 games for the Cavaliers last season. They played on three state championship teams at Cox. . . . Junior Leigh Goldberg, another Cox product who played in every game as a sophomore at Princeton last year, has left the team, according to the Princeton sports information office. . . . Sophomore Wendy Baylor (Cox) is backup goalie for Mary Washington. The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in Division III, are 4-0, with goalie Stephanie Lowe recording four shutouts. . . . Senior Mary Dye (Cox) owns the Duke career assist record with 34. She has a goal and an assist for the 3-2 Blue Devils this season. . . Longwood scorers with four goals and eight points.

NORFOLK STATE UPDATE: Norfolk State's volleyball team, which was winless in its first four starts, has bounced back into contention in the CIAA race. The Spartanettes, led by senior hitter Kimi Jackson and junior hitter/setters Holly Gray and Dianne Harris, have won their last three matches and stand at 5-4, 3-0 in the conference. Jackson is the leader with 62 kills. . . . In men's tennis, NSU defeated the University of the District of Columbia in its first match of the fall season, losing only one set in seven matches. Alvi Kigel, Todd Byrom, Assaf Almozlino, Bradley Jordan, Kevin Scarlett and James Murray chalked up singles victories. . . . The women's cross country team defeated Hampton, 37-20, in a practice meet at Mount Trashmore. Hampton's Gabriela Chytrova was the overall winner, with NSU's Karen Sinclair coming in seond overall.

MARLINS REPORT: Coach Don Forsyth says Virginia Wesleyan's golf team ``could be our strongest in a long time.'' The Marlins tied for second in Christopher Newport's tournament and won the Randolph-Macon event. Freshman Ray Zimmerman (Kempsville) and juniors Michael O'Leary and Matt Mackin are shooting 78 while freshman Chad Jenkins is averaging 81. . . . Sonny Travis' unbeaten men's soccer team (7-0-1), ranked No. 4 in the nation in NCAA Division III last week, dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the South Region because of a 1-1 tie with Mary Washington. Co-captain Evan Whitson is the leading scorer with 12 goals and six assists. . . . The women's soccer team (6-0-1) has won five straight matches. Marcie Blackbourn is the leading scorer with nine goals and six assists in six games.THE CAPTAINS: Sophomore James Ratcliff (Western Branch) defeated 227 other cross country runners in winning the Lebanon Valley Invitational in course-record time of 25:59 over the 8K course as Christopher Newport won the 27-team event. Rich Schugeld (Western Branch) placed fourth in 26:25. . . . The CNU runners moved up to 15th in the country. Last week they entered the Division III poll at 16th, the first national ranking in the history of the program. . . . The Lady Captains finished 15th out of 24 teams, with junior Nicole Horn (Great Bridge) setting the pace with a 49th-place finish in 22:22. . . . In soccer, Jeff Samuel, a freshman from Salem High, scored four minutes into the game Sept. 14 to help the Captains win at Marymount, 3-2. On Wednesday, James Hable, a freshman from Salem had an assist as CNU defeated Barton, 2-1.

NOTEWORTHY: As a junior last season, Catawba's Allison Ankerson was a first-team All-American pick in soccer as a sweeper. This year the Maury grad is continuing her outstanding play, leading Catawba to a 4-0-1 start and a No. 7 ranking in NCAA Division II. . . . Washington & Lee middle hitter Hilary Martin, a freshman from Norfolk Academy, is the ODAC volleyball athlete of the week. She earned all-tournament honors at the W&L Invitational, leading the Generals into the championship match for the first time in the four-year history of the tourney. In six tournament matches, Martin tallied 56 kills, 21 blocks and 44 digs, including a career-high 16 kills in a three-game loss to Pitt-Johnstown. . . . Amy Cross (Churchland) was named the Dixie Conference athlete of the week in women's cross country. In her first season with the first-year Averett team, she placed first at the Bennett College Invitational with a time of 23:18 for the 5K course. . . . Freshman defender Aubrey Von Lindern (Bayside) is a starter for the Greensboro College women's soccer team. She scored in a 3-0 win over Randolph-Macon Women's College, boosting Greensboro's record to 6-0. It was Aubrey's second goal playing defense.

W&M SOCCER: The Tribe, No. 10 in this week's Soccer America poll, will take a 6-0 record into the ODU Met Classic this weekend. Junior Billy Owens (Kempsville) is tied for second place on W&M all-time assist list, and is ninth in career points with 53 in only 50 career games. . . . Sophomore Steve Jolley, another Kempsville alum, is tied for the team scoring lead this season with 11 points, while freshman Wade Barrett (First Colonial) is fourth with seven. . . . After losing to 13th-ranked Wisconsin, 2-0, and defeating Minnesota, 2-0, last weekend, the W&M women's soccer team (4-2) dropped three spots to No. 11.

HERE AND THERE: Cornerback John Hannah (Great Bridge) had two interceptions, including one that set up the winning drive, in Ferrum's 17-14 football victory over Cortland State. In three games, Hannah has three interceptions, one fumble recovery and 13 tackles. Junior David Waddell (Deep Creek) is averaging 38.3 yards per punt, the longest a 55-yarder. . . . Johnny Weeks, a sophomore from Norfolk Collegiate, is starting goalkeeper for the VMI soccer team. . . . Sophomore Tod Herron (First Colonial) is the a starting offensive guard for Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., which plays NAIA Division II football. by CNB
