NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY GROWING, GROWING...

Norfolk State University's on a roll.

NSU - the nation's fifth-largest historically black (but racially integrated) institution of higher education - has lately gained:

A $10 million federal grant that will transform its NASA/Langley-linked materials-science laboratory into a strong research center;

Norfolk City Council's commitment of 25 acres of public land in South Brambleton to accommodate a projected campus expansion; and

A Walt Disney World Co. gift of $55,000 - $50,000 for a planned hotel/restaurant management program and $5,000 for a scholarship.

Like Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Virginia Wesleyan College and Tidewater Community College, NSU is a clean industry that pumps dollars and knowledge into South Hampton Roads and beyond.

That it's a thriving state-assisted university composed of nine schools makes it a potent constructive force any community would welcome. With a 1993-94 operating budget of $84 million, NSU is schooling 9,100 students. Its $32 million payroll supports 1,200 full- and part-time employees.

Those numbers are destined to grow as demand for NSU's course offerings, talents and expertise increases. The latest public and private contributions to its financial health are just the kind of support the university must have to meet that demand. by CNB
