COMPANY CHOSEN

The School Board on Monday night chose a Virginia Beach company to conduct a study of job descriptions and salaries for all school system employees.

Municipal Advisors Inc. will charge the city $59,875 for the study, expected to be concluded in December - around the time school officials will draft next year's budget.

The company was chosen from among a handful of companies. Board members said Municipal Advisors' proposal, while not the cheapest, appeared to offer the most comprehensive study.

The company will interview employees, for example, before coming up with new job descriptions for all school workers.

The company also will propose new pay scales for all employees, and compare them to salaries offered by other area school systems and private companies.

Municipal Advisors also has promised to leave the school system with a computer program for salaries, and train school officials to use it.

School Board members stressed that the salary study is not expected to mean lower pay for any existing employees, although pay levels could be lowered for newly hired workers in some categories. Some employees may be paid more.
