NORFOLK-BASED MILLER OIL BUYS 6 GAS/CONVENIENCE STORES IN AREA

Miller Oil Co. Inc. recently bought six gas and convenience stores in Hampton Roads and is building or designing four others.

In addition, the Norfolk-based company plans to open fast-food franchises inside four of its Miller Mart convenience stores by year's end, said president A.C. ``Gus'' Miller.

Miller said the various changes will generate at least another $20 million in annual revenues for the company, which pulled in about $80 million last year.

Miller Oil purchased four of its new gas stations/convenience stores from Steuart Petroleum Co. of Washington. Two are in Newport News and the other two are in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. It bought one in Norfolk from Fisca Oil Co. of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and it purchased the other, in Newport News, from San Francisco-based Chevron Corp.

A newly constructed store is to open in Newport News on Dec. 15. Miller Oil plans to build three other Miller Marts next year: one in Norfolk and two in Chesapeake.

When the planned expansion is completed, the company will have more than 50 retail locations throughout southeastern Virginia.

Miller said the company is in the midst of a major refurbishing of all of its existing stores. And based on the success of a 10-month-old Subway store inside one of its Hampton locations, Miller Oil is also expanding rapidly into fast food.

By Nov. 1, it plans to add a Subway inside a Newport News location, a Burger King in its Waverly store, and a Hot Stuff Pizza inside a Portsmouth store. On Dec. 15, it intends to open an Arby's inside another store in Newport News, he said.
