LOCAL SHIPS, SUBS ORDERED TO MOVE TOWARD RED SEA

About 12,000 sailors and Marines serve aboard the George Washington joint task group. President Clinton has ordered elements of the group moved from the Adriatic Sea toward the Red Sea.

The task group is made up of 15 ships and submarines, all but three from Norfolk. It left for a six-month deployment on May 20 and was expected back home in mid-November.

President Clinton apparently has ordered the George Washington into the Red Sea, where its air wing of fighters and jets could reach Northern Iraq. The carrier has two squadrons of F-14 Tomcat fighters aboard, plus one squadron of A-6 Intruder bombers - all from Oceana Naval Air Station - plus F/A-18 Hornets from Cecil Field, Fla.

Amphibious transport dock Austin, from Norfolk.

Dock landing ship Tortuga, from Norfolk.

Tank landing ship Harlan County, from Norfolk.

Destroyer Deyo, from Charleston, S.C.

Guided missile destroyer Barry, from Norfolk.

Guided missile cruiser San Jacinto, from Norfolk.

Guided missile cruiser Thomas S. Gates, from Norfolk.

Guided missile frigate Doyle, from Mayport, Fla.

Oiler Kalamazoo, from Norfolk.

Ammunition ship Santa Barbara, from Charleston, S.C.

Attack submarine Newport News, from Norfolk.

Attack submarine Hyman G. Rickover, from Norfolk.
