GULF STREAM WINS TEAM HONORS AT NAGS HEAD

The Gulf Stream Fishing Team landed 67 fish and scored 201 points Thursday and Friday to win the team segment of the 44th annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament.

It was the first victory for the Nags Head team, which had trailed the Sanduners International Fishing Team by 20 points going into Friday's final sessions.

The Sanduners finished second with 66 fish and 189 points.

Fish were scored by length, with bluefish making up most of the catch.

However, catches also included some speckled trout, puppy drum and flounder. The Gulf Stream Fishing Team included: Norm Bradford, Tom Burke, Jack Herrington, Curtis Miller, Ted Frizzell and Louis Knoerzer.

The Sanduners featured John A. Watkins, Steve Benson, Phil Kanis, Adny McCann, George McLean and Wally Smith.

The Rising Tides of Nags Head finished third with 54 catches and 189 points. The team included: Pat Preston, Harvey Kelly, Bob McLendon, Dave Maryott, Ted Moseley and Dennis Ross.

The North Carolina Sea Hags of Nags Head were the best of several all-female squads in the 80-team field. They beached 20 fish and scored 72 points, good for 29th overall.

Team members were: Glenda Gaskill, Helen Hoppe, Jane Wirth, Etta Parrott, Edith Sheetz and Pat Moor.

Individual winners included:

Most fish: Female, (tie) Edith Sheetz, North Carolina Sea Hags, and Arlyne Vince, Hatteras Ladies, 6 catches; Male, Phil Kanis, Sanduners International, 22.

Largest fish: Female, Gwen Evans, Hatterascals, 20-inch speckled trout; Male, Anderson Midgett, Commercial Six, 25-inch puppy drum.

Most Points: Female, Lynette Godwin, Kitty Hawk Surf Fishing Club, 27; Male, Harold Sigmon, Albemarle Anglers Club, 68.

Tournament contestants beached 1,611 fish, up from less than 190 a year ago, and scored 5,237 points.

The contest continues with an individual session, open to anyone, this morning. Sponsored by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club, the tournament is headquartered at Soundside.
