JUDGE ORDERS TESTS ON WOMAN CHARGED WITH ABDUCTING BABY

A judge has ordered a psychological evaluation for a woman charged with dressing like a hospital worker and abducting a 2-day-old baby from his mother's hospital room at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in September 1993.

Defense attorney Andrew Sacks asked for the evaluation on behalf of Teena O'Sullivan, 29, who has a history of emotional problems. The evaluation is to be done in the next few weeks. Trial is set for Dec. 28.

O'Sullivan, a Chesapeake mother of two who apparently was distraught because a recent hysterectomy prevented her from having more children, has maintained that she found the baby in shrubs outside the hospital. She said she took the boy to her mother's apartment for safekeeping before calling the hospital.

O'Sullivan pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge of attempted kidnapping of a child in Anne Arundel County in Maryland and received an 18-month prison term which was suspended.

She was sentenced to five years probation, the first three supervised, and was ordered to receive counseling, according to Maryland court records. In that case she was charged with going to a toy store and taking a shopping cart containing a sleeping 5-month-old baby. ILLUSTRATION: O'Sullivan
