GIRL HIT BY CAR DIES

A 2-year-old girl died Wednesday morning from head injuries she suffered when a motorist drove onto a city sidewalk and struck her and her grandmother Tuesday afternoon.

Bill Roth, spokesman for the Newport News Police Department, said Shaniqua Washington was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk at 8:01 a.m.

The girl's 41-year-old grandmother, Margaret Washington, remains in stable condition at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News with ligament injuries to both knees, Roth said.

Roth said charges have not been filed against the driver, but an investigation is continuing.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 5500 block of Marshall Ave. Washington and her granddaughter were walking near a supermarket when a 1988 gray Mercury Topaz left the road and hit them.

Shaniqua Washington was caught under the car and dragged more than 60 feet. Margaret Washington was thrown onto the hood and carried about 150 feet.

The driver, Arine Moody, 43, may have suffered a seizure, police said. by CNB
