KELLAM, BAYSIDE RACE TO TITLES

Kellam's Matt Morgan came on strong at the finish, while Kempsville's Adrienne Parker was too strong from start to finish.

Morgan and Parker rolled to individual victories Wednesday in near-ideal running conditions Wednesday in the Beach District cross country championships at Mount Trashmore.

In the team competition, Morgan, Dan Daugherty (sixth) and David Waksmunski (ninth) all placed in the top 10 to lead the Kellam boys to their third consecutive district team title, while Jennifer Bowden (second), Carolyn Zanelli (seventh) and Sara Marlow (eighth) helped Bayside add the district meet crown to its regular-season title.

The top four teams in both the boys and girls events, along with all other top-15 runners, advance to the Eastern Region meet Nov. 3 in Newport News Park.

First Colonial narrowly missed the cut twice, placing fifth by four points in the boys race and by one point in the girls.

Morgan, ranked fifth in the area, broke away from fourth-ranked Zac Halm of First Colonial and third-ranked Billy Edwards of Tallwood in the final mile and breezed to the boys crown.

``Either one of those guys is good enough to beat me any day,'' said Morgan, whose time of 16:47 was 12 seconds faster than Halm's and 19 seconds better than Edwards'. ``Today was just my day.''

Parker, ranked second in the area, was even more dominant in the girls race. The Kempsville sophomore, who won the 1993 region outdoor 1600-meter title and is in her first season of cross country, seized the lead immediately and spent the rest of the race making the field disappear. She took an 80-meter lead over Bowden into the final mile.

Her winning time, 19:55, was just two seconds shy of the course best for the year, also set by Parker. And she did it despite a pulled back muscle that allowed her to train only once in the past week.

In other cross country:

Top-ranked Eric Adams blistered the Great Bridge course at 15:21, 26 seconds ahead of No. 2 Mike Donnelly, as the Wildcats boys swept the top three spots to beat Western Branch, 17-45. The Great Bridge girls captured seven of the top 10 positions to edge the Bruins, 27-32, in a meeting of unbeaten Southeastern District teams. Top-ranked Meredith Turnage of Western Branch won in 18:24.

Sixth-ranked Ryan Smith edged Wilson's Perez Bottoms as the host Churchland boys defeated the Presidents and Norcom in a Southeastern District meet. Both Smith and Bottoms had a 16:35 clocking.

Oscar Smith (6-1) placed four runners in the first six to beat the Deep Creek and Indian River girls and clinch its first winning season.
