HONORS AND AWARDS

TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Joni Riddick, a native of Gates County, g1sbthm27 Riddick N.C., has been named Teacher of the Year by the Nash-Rocky Mount School System. She is a teacher at the Nashville Elementary School.

With 1,100 teachers in the school system, the accomplishment is made all the more distinguishable by the fact that Riddick has been teaching for only three years.

Riddick also was honored with the Elementary School Teacher of the Year Award and the Ben Craig Outstanding Educator Award.

She is a graduate of Albemarle Academy in Elizabeth City, N.C., and Peace College, Raleigh. She received a bachelor's degree in education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Robert Riddick of Gates County.

TAYLOR NAMED MANAGER: J. Frank Taylor has been named mang2sbthm27 Taylor ager of the Suffolk branch of NationsBank.

Taylor, an assistant vice president and consumer banker, joined the company in Suffolk in 1957.

He is a graduate of the Virginia School of Management and Tidewater Community College.

Taylor is also an active member of the Suffolk Kiwanis Club, where he currently serves as president of the Kiwanis Foundation.

ASKEW WINS AWARDS: Laura Askew, a fourth-grade honor student at Windsor Elementary School, has won several awards in karate at the Hampton Roads Battle of Champions at Bethel High School in Hampton. Laura was awarded a first-place award in Kug3sbthm27 Askew mite, second-place in Weapons, and a second-place in Kata.

A student of karate at the Windsor School of Dance, she is the daughter of Gary and Theresa Askew of Windsor.

AAUW EVENTS: The Suffolk Branch of the American Association of University Women sold Peanut Fest clothing at the recent Suffolk Peanut Fest.

The proceeds will be used to sponsor a local high school senior with a scholarship. The club also contributes to the Education Foundation.

Local girls are the major winners in this year's ``Fest Favorites'' drawing, sponsored by the Suffolk Chapter of the AAUW.

Winners were Tom Savage of Suffolk, who won the first-place ``Fest Favorites'' basket of assorted Suffolk products; Jeanne Heishman of Edinburg, who won the second-place slateboard; and Clyde Hopkins of Norfolk, who won the third-place Pruden ham.

The money raised by the drawing, which was held during Peanut Fest '94, will benefit the chapter's local scholarship.

Each spring, the chapter awards a $500 scholarship to a local female high school graduate, who plans to pursue a career in math, science, technology or in another non-traditional area.

DECA CLUB EVENTS: The Nansemond River High School DECA Club was the host group recently for the monthly Suffolk United Way Cabinet meeting.

The club hired the Catering Class to provide a variety of party trays for the luncheon. Marketing students, who are members of the Catering Class, served at the luncheon.

DECA students escorted committee members to the Marketing Education classroom, gave a tour of the school store, the Warrior's Den; and showed the group the United Way display prepared by the marketing students.

DECA members also prepared and delivered 15 balloon bouquets to the East End Baptist Day Care Center recently.

Each day care provider was presented with a teacher's calendar, which has a daily quote for the year.

Day Care providers who were recognized are: Carolyn Artis, Jonathan Artis, Lisa Artis, Marcus Artis, Laverne Brockington, Concetta Copeland, Henrietta Goodman, Yvonne Gray, Annie Kee, Marcia Richmond, Darlene Smith, Marian Smith, Everly Whitehead, Sheila Williams and Linda Wright.
