CHURCHES FEATURE HARVEST FESTIVITIES

THE COOL CRISPNESS of fall is in the air. Brilliant colors are splashed across woodland trees. Pumpkin patches abound. And farmers are harvesting their last fields of peanuts.

During this festive time, many local churches are planning harvest parties and other holiday activities to foster a spirit of fellowship and to thank God for His rich harvest blessings.

Oakland Christian

Church members will gather for an Allhallows' Eve Celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

``There's going to be fun for the whole family,'' said Lynn Pope, director of church activities.

The fun will include a cake walk, face painting, bean bag throw, fishing and bobbing for apples. A pumpkin decorating contest will test creative imagination.

``The purpose of this event is to promote fellowship,'' Pope said. ``It's a harvest celebration for the entire family.''

A dinner of hot dogs and brunswick stew will be provided by the church. Admission is free but participants are asked to donate a cake for the cake walk.

Bethlehem Christian

The church's women's fellowship will sponsor a fall bazaar From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in Graham Hall.

Featured booths will include a country store, sweet shop, toy shop, and a Christmas and craft shop. A silent auction and white elephant sale will feature such items as jewelry, artwork, floral arrangements and weekend getaways.

Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. featuring soup, sandwiches and hot dogs. Dinner will be served from 4-7 p.m., including turkey, dressing, candied yams, string beans and cranberry sauce. Dinner tickets are $5.00. For more information, call 539-4274. Magnolia United Methodist

The AppleFest '94 celebration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring fresh-harvested apples from the Dickie Brothers Farm in Nelson County in the Virginia mountains.

Mounds of apples will arrive at Magnolia for distribution throughout the day. The choices will include Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Staymen, Rome, Winesap and Granny Smith. Purchases may be made by the bushel ($15), half-bushel ($9) and peck($5). Fresh-pressed cider will also be available for $4 per gallon.

AppleFest activities will also include children's games, apple demonstrations and a giant bake sale. The Men's Fellowship of the church will sell homemade brunswick stew and polish sausages.

All proceeds will go to the missions and ministry. For more information, call 538-8552. The church is at 1764 Wilroy Road.

Wilroy Baptist

The church is planning a ``Great Day in the Morning!'' for Sunday, beginning at 9:45 a.m. Activities include dinner, special singing, games and fellowship. A nursery will be provided.

Main Street Methodist

For the harvest festival, begining at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, children are invited to wear costumes and gather at the church. The group will travel to the Hillcrest Retirement Center to visit residents. Participants are asked to bring fresh fruit which will be distributed to the residents.

After visiting Hillcrest, children will return to Main Street where they will enjoy games and surprises provided by the United Methodist Youth Fellowship.

A potluck dinner will be held at 6 p.m. for the entire church family. Call 539-8751 for more information. The church is at 202 North Main St.

Liberty Spring Christian

``Come one, come all'' is the invitation from the young people of the church to a harvest celebration from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Afternoon activities will include a cake walk, bingo, volleyball, bobbing for apples, pick-up ducks, bean bag throw, pin the nose on the pumpkin and ``Look Who's In Jail.''

This celebration is for the whole family and will include a meal of homemade soup and hot dogs. Hayrides and a campfire sing-a-long complete with marshmallows are on the schedule.

There wil be no charge but donations to help cover costs will be accepted. For additional information, call 986-4403. The church is at 4213 Whaleyville Blvd.

Providence United Methodist

The fall bazaar is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church. Activities will include crafts, food, fun for children and lunch. A special open concert by a local gospel group at 2 p.m. will provide entertainment.
