UNITED WAY HELPS CHILDREN'S CENTER

Several local agencies have been awarded one-time grants by United Way to help them increase their local outreach.

The largest grant, $15,000, was given to The Children's Center to establish a developmental program for disabled children.

The money comes from the United Way's Special Human Needs Response Fund program, according to Robert Hayes, chairman of the United Way of South Hampton Roads.

The money, to be used to fund capital projects, became available because of an increase in United Way pledge collections during the past year, Hayes said.

Several other agencies that provide services throughout Hampton Roads, including Suffolk, received special grants.

Jewish Family Services received $4,000 to find a staff position for the agency's home health care director, and SEVAMP Senior Services got $3,449 to help pay for a new van.

Shelters operated by the Dwelling Place, The Haven Family Center, Help and Emergency Response, PARC Place Shelter, Samaritan House, the Salvation Army and the YWCA will be given a total of $20,000.

We are pleased to provide these agencies with the means to extend their outreach and services to Hampton Roads citizens,'' Hayes said. ``We expect the receiving grants to be able to leverage the grants to gain income from other sources.'' by CNB
