PORTSMOUTH ANGLER TAKES AMBERJACK LEAD WITH 100-POUNDER

Richard Williams of Portsmouth has taken the lead in the amberjack category of the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with one of the largest and latest 'jacks landed in the state.

The fish weighed 100 pounds and was boated at the South Tower, about 50 miles southeast of Rudee Inlet. Williams was aboard the Predator 13. The state record is 118 pounds, set in 1986 by Mark Roberts of Norfolk.

Striped bass continued to offer only mild excitement throughout the lower Chesapeake Bay over the weekend. Many fishermen are convinced that water temperatures need to drop a few more degrees for action to really perk up.

Big stripers, in excess of 20 pounds, remain extremely scarce, another situation that should be reversed by falling water temperatures.

Meanwhile, there was a big run of red drum in the surf at Hatteras Island on Wednesday night, and bigeye tuna and king mackerel provided outstanding action for ocean fishermen off the Outer Banks.

Recent days also produced a sailfish release off Oregon Inlet and a blue marlin catch off Hatteras.

Freshwater action was generally slow, although Rick Falls of Zuni boated a 16 1/4-pound striper at Western Branch Reservoir.
