DEATH RULED A HOMICIDE<

The death of a 76-year-old man whose body was found in his apartment Monday morning was ruled a homicide Tuesday.

Acquaintances of William Vaughan, of the 1900 block of Prentis Ave., found him on the kitchen floor. He had been hit on the head.

G.A. Brown, spokesman for the Portsmouth police, said Monday that Vaughan's death was suspicious but had not been ruled a homicide. The murder designation was made after police reviewed the state medical examiner's report, which said the head blow contributed to Vaughan's death.

The primary cause of death has not been determined, Brown said.

Brown said robbery had not been ruled out as a possible motive. No suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portsmouth Police Department at 393-8536 or Crime Line at 488-7777.
