PANEL OKS PURCHASE TO EXPAND JOCKEY'S RIDGE

A state legislative panel on Tuesday cleared the way for the state to buy four parcels of land in northeastern North Carolina, including two lots in Nags Head, to expand Jockey's Ridge State Park.

The legislature's Governmental Operations Committee, a panel of the General Assembly's key lawmakers that oversees state government operations, voted unanimously to endorse the purchase of about 2,187 acres of land in three Albemarle-area counties.

The purchase of the property will next be referred to the Council of State, a panel comprised of the governor and other top state officials, for final approval.

The legislators approved the purchase of two half-acre parcels of land in Nags Head from Alfred M. Tillett and St. Clair Tillett and their concrete construction firm for $37,500 each to expand Jockey's Ridge State Park. The land will be bought with the proceeds from the sale of bonds and from federal appropriations through the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The panel also approved the purchase of about 121 acres of land in Martin County near Williamston for $292,765 for construction of an Eastern North Carolina Agricultural Complex and of about 2,065 acres of land near Creswell in Washington County for $483,210 for N.C. State University's forestry school. by CNB
