THREE AREA PLAYERS MAKE AAA ALL-STATE PATRICK HENRY OF ASHLAND DOMINATED, PLACING FIVE PLAYERS ON THE FIRST TEAM.

Defensive backs Rudy Howard of Norcom and Michael Beverly of Booker T. Washington and offensive tackle Dontrel Parker of Deep Creek were named to the Associated Press All-State Group AAA team Monday.

Howard, a second-team All-State selection last year, had eight interceptions this season while Beverly, who transferred from Norfolk Academy, had 10 interceptions. Both were named the defensive players of the year in their respective districts.

Parker anchored the offensive line for a Deep Creek squad that finished 13-1, losing to Patrick Henry-Ashland in the state's Division 5 championship game.

South Hampton Roads players making the second team include wide receiver Dre Bly of Western Branch, running back Mike Pishioneri of Kempsville, defensive linemen Shawn Greene of Indian River and Donald Scott of Kempsville and linebacker Quintae McLean of Indian River.

Patrick Henry-Ashland's 14-0 season produced a windfall of individual recognition. The Patriots occupy eight spots, including five first-unit selections. Patrick Henry's Andre Curtis made it as both a linebacker and a center, and the Patriots' Ray Long Jr. was named the coach of the year.

About the only place where Patrick Henry failed to come up big on the AP team, selected by Virginia sports writers, was in the player of the year balloting. That honor went to Maurice Daniels, Division 6 champion Annandale's gifted two-way performer. Daniels was a first-team selection at both offensive guard and linebacker.

Of the eight All-Group AAA selections involving Patrick Henry players, five are from offense, including quarterback Daninelle Derricott, the Richmond Times-Dispatch's player of the year. Derricott completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,205 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he rushed 164 times for 1,421 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Another first-team pick from Patrick Henry is Derricott's favorite target, Erron Kinney, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound tight end who had 32 receptions for 750 yards. Kinney is joined at end by Woodbridge's Marcus Griffin, who had 1,094 receiving yards on 68 catches.

Patrick Henry's Damien Woody is a first-team offensive tackle with Deep Creek's Parker, the best offensive lineman on a 13-1 Deep Creek team that lost to the Patriots in the Division 5 championship game.

Daniels is joined at guard by Pulaski's Chris Lawson. Patrick Henry's Jay Wingfield is a second-team pick.

John Poole of George Washington-Danville is the first-team center, and the Patriots' Curtis was named to the second team.

Leading the backs is Annandale's Jasmin Glenn, who rushed for 1,992 yards and 22 touchdowns to lead the Atoms to their second consecutive Division 6 title. Glenn capped his prep career with a six-touchdown performance in the state championship game, Annandale's 26th consecutive victory.

Also named first-team backs are Theomone Brooks of GW-Danville and Antoine Womack of Phoebus. Brooks rushed for 1,382 yards while averaging more than 10 yards per carry, and he also caught 24 passes for 250 yards. He scored 20 touchdowns. Womack rushed for 1,595 yards and 20 touchdowns.

On defense, the linemen are L.J. Jones of Phoebus, West Potomac's Mike Willetts and Chris Machovina of Lake Braddock. Patrick Henry's John Smith is a second-team choice.

The Patriots' Keith Short is a first-team defensive end, as is Donovan Yarbough, the top player on Annandale's defense.

Daniels rolled up 136 first hits, 223 assists, nine caused fumbles and 23 tackles for losses. The 6-2, 225-pound senior has lined up official visits at Nebraska, Penn State, Virginia and Missouri.

Daniels is joined at first-team linebacker by the Patrick Henry-Ashland's Curtis, a converted defensive end, and Pulaski's Eric Webb.

The defensive backs are Howard, Beverly and West Potomac's Billy Beal.

The return specialist is Jamie Price of Patrick Henry-Roanoke. Price averaged 22 yards on 26 returns - both kickoffs and punts. ILLUSTRATION: HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
