JANICE LEMEN

Mrs. Janice Lemen, professor of art at Longwood College, died Friday in a nursing home in Laguna Hills. She was 78 and died from complications following a stroke.

A native of Missouri, Mrs. Lemen was a full-time member of the Art Department at Longwood for 25 years and was a full professor from 1973-78. Prior to that, she was an art supervisor at the Longwood Campus School and a consultant part-time with the Virginia Department of Education. Mrs. Lemen had more than 25 one-man shows and participated in more than 60 group exhibitions. Her paintings and prints are included in both public and private art collections throughout Virginia. She was active in many professional art organizations and served on several committees both at Longwood and in the art community in general. She started the Virginia Artists Collection that is a permanent collection of works by artists from Virginia which is at the Center for the Visual Arts in Farmville.

Mrs. Lemen is survived by her daughter, Nancy Olmstead of Playa del Rey, Calif.
