JOSEPH R. CARPENTER

Joseph Randolph Carpenter, 81, of Hampton, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 1994, at Sentara Hampton General Hospital.

Mr. Carpenter was born in Fort Monroe, Va., and except during World War II was a lifelong resident of Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Maude Rawlings Carpenter, his two sisters, Madolyn Flynn Blumenthal and Thelma Carpenter Shaw, and his brother, Robert Edward Carpenter.

He was a 1935 graduate of Hampton High School, where he was an outstanding athlete, earning awards in football, basketball and track. He attended the University of Richmond on a football scholarship. During World War II he worked for General Electric in Lynn, Mass. After returning to Hampton he owned a neighborhood market and then began a 29-year career with NACA (later NASA). He was a welder before retiring in 1979 as a construction inspector. Mr. Carpenter was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ada Lorene Yates Carpenter; two sons, Joseph R. ``Chuck'' Carpenter of Norfolk and Brian Charles Carpenter of Gloucester; a daughter, Suzanne Carpenter Wilkinson of Staunton; two grandsons, Jesse R. Carpenter and Timothy D. Carpenter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. Rogers W. Lamison with interment at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Casemate Museum, P.O. Box 341, Fort Monroe, Va. 23651.
