An 18-year-old firefighter was killed Tuesday afternoon when the truck he was driving to a fire crashed into a ditch.

Steve Colona, a volunteer with the Melfa Volunteer Fire Department, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Trooper S.H. Lynch of the Virginia State Police.

The accident occurred at 4:38 p.m. as Colona was driving west on State Route 226 and entered a curve. Colona's vehicle ran off the left side of the road and into the ditch. Another firefighter who was a passenger in the truck was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was treated for injuries.
