NOTHING AFFIRMATIVE HERE

I read with disgust ``FBI will hire 2,000 agents in next 3 years'' (news, Dec. 27). I could not help but wonder what has happened to the work ethic and quality of work in America.

The article says many of the jobs will go to minorities and women; but if a white male wants a job, he may have to have a law or accounting degree, speak an Asian language or be able to fly a plane. This is equality in the work place?

Affirmative action will destroy this country's competitive edge in the worldwide economy because we are forced to hire people because of gender and/or color. Whatever happened to hiring based on qualifications? Sounds like discrimination to me.

The article says the new hirings are due partly to lawsuits of racial and sexual discriminations. Could it be that these applicants were not qualified or by some other means were incapable of doing their particular job?

The quick fix: Hire more of the same type of people to quiet these allegations. The old slogan used by the military years ago comes to mind: Uncle Sam Wants You! (but not if you are a white male.)
