INVOLUNTARY REPATRIATION OF HAITIANS IS UNDER WAY

The United States Friday began the forced repatriation of nearly 4,000 Haitian refugees who were granted ``safe haven'' last year at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.

A Coast Guard vessel docked at the main port here Friday afternoon carrying 54 Haitians who had been seeking political asylum in the United States.

Appearing somber and somewhat disoriented, they were each given $15 and a tote bag containing soap and toothpaste, then loaded into yellow school buses and driven to a nearby bus station.

Human rights groups say the new policy of involuntary repatriation is illegal and dangerous. by CNB
