WILL RICHMOND HONOR A BLACK, NORTHERN SOLDIER?

ILLUSTRATION: ASSOCIATED PRESS

A historian has offered an alternative as Richmond debates erecting

a statue of Arthur Ashe Jr., the late tennis star. Brian Pohanka

says Civil War hero Powhatan Beaty, shown here with a likeness of

his Congressional Medal of Honor, belongs with Southern heroes on

Monument Avenue. ``Here is a true hero of the Civil War, who also

happens to be black. He also happens to have fought for the North,''

Pohanka says.
