DEEP CREEK PULLS AWAY TO TOPPLE CHURCHLAND

Deep Creek served notice that it's premature to write off the Hornets as a Southeastern District girls basketball title hopeful.

The defending champion Hornets (10-3, 5-2) ended a two-game losing streak and knocked Churchland out of a share of the district lead with Great Bridge, downing the Truckers, 60-51, Tuesday night at Deep Creek.

``It was a game we had to win,'' said Deep Creek coach Otis Etheridge, whose teams have never lost three in a row in his coaching tenure.

Tamara Sivels and newcomer Anecia Braithwaite shouldered the scoring burden for Deep Creek in a contest that had all the intensity of a playoff game.

Sivels, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, had a game-high 19 points.

Braithwaite, a 5-7 sophomore guard who was playing on the Princess Anne junior varsity at this time last year, chipped in 16 points. Braithwaite, whose family moved to the Deep Creek area in June, notched 12 of her points in the closing quarter, six at the foul line.

``That was the most points I've had in a varsity game,'' said Braithwaite. ``I think I had 17 once in a junior varsity game.''

Churchland coach Duke Conrad was left scratching his head over Braithwaite's effort in the clutch.

``We had to start fouling in that last period and we picked this newcomer. Obviously that was wrong,'' Conrad said.

``There's no doubt that we ended up losing at the foul line. We had three more field goals. And look at the free throws. Deep Creek made 22 and we made only 6 of 19.''

The Truckers missed the front end of five one-and-ones in the fourth quarter.

The score was tied on 10 occasions and Churchland carried a one-point lead into the closing quarter.

With 4:47 left, Braithwaite dropped in a field goal and free throw for a 46-44 Deep Creek lead and the Hornets stayed in front the rest of the way.

Center Michele Jarman paced Churchland with 14 points. Forward Kim Elliot had 13 and guard Kizzy Butler scored 12.

Churchland (9-4, 5-2) was hampered by the loss of playmaker Summer Speidell, who injured her back with 1:58 to play in the third quarter and was unable to return.
