SKIPPER DISCIPLINED: The commanding officer of the fast attack submarine Hampton was disciplined Thursday after allegations that he assaulted an enlisted crewman.

The Dec. 12 incident involved a third class petty officer assigned to the submarine's engineering department, the Navy said. The sailor said he was choked by the commanding officer because he failed to follow orders.

The Hampton's commanding officer is Cmdr. Steve Correll. Officials said Correll reported the incident to the commander of Submarine Squadron 8 upon the Hampton's return to port Dec. 18.

Capt. Jim Holloway, the squadron commander, conducted hearing, called a captain's mast, and administrative action was taken against him. The Navy would not say how he was disciplined.

Correll remains in command of the Hampton, a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarine commissioned in November 1993.

TRAINING EXERCISE TO BEGIN: More than 13,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines and 17 ships and submarines leave their homeports and bases this week to conduct a joint-service training exercise off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.

The Joint Task Force Exercise 95-2 is centered around the Theodore Roosevelt carrier battle group, which is preparing to deploy overseas in March. The exercise is designed to test war fighting capabilities and will include up to 700 soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C.

Taking place in an area from Virginia to Georgia, the exercise will serve as the final qualification for the battle group and its amphibious arm of Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Maneuvers include air assaults, raids, civilian evacuations, rescue of downed pilots, reconnaissance and other special forces operations.

The exercise will be under the command of Vice Adm. Jay L. Johnson, commander of the 2nd Fleet. The commander of the task force is Rear Adm. C. S. Abbot.

Participating ships are: carrier Theodore Roosevelt; guided missile cruisers Ticonderoga, Hue City and Mississippi; oiler Seattle; guided missile destroyer Arleigh Burke; guided missile frigates Hawes, Kauffman and Clark; the 2nd Fleet command ship Mount Whitney; attack submarines Montpelier, Key West and Batfish; amphibious assault ships Guam and Kearsarge; amphibious transport dock Nashville; and dock landing ship Pensacola. by CNB
