THE LADY BRUINS MAKE THEIR MARK IN STATE RANKINGS TINY SCHOOL RANKS SEVENTH IN THE STATE, BUT STILL HAS TOUGH ROAD IN CONFERENCE.

WINS OVER 2A and 4A schools early in the season have earned the Camden County High School girls basketball team respect around the state. Last week, the Lady Bruins found themselves seventh in the Associated Press 1A state rankings.

Camden head coach Dianne Overton said she was not expecting the ranking.

``I was really kind of shocked. I didn't expect it,'' she said. ``Maybe it's because it's my second year of coaching. I never really gave it any thought.''

How has the team reacted to the ranking? The Lady Bruins hung on to beat an average Northampton East team, but not after blowing a seemingly comfortable 18-point lead.

``We knew they weren't going to be easy and we didn't think we would get the kind of lead we got,'' Overton said. ``We got the lead and got overconfident. Once they cut it close, we decided to get back in there and play.

``We talked about the ranking quite a bit before the game about not letting it get to their heads. They said lets think about the conference and not what the state rankings are,'' Overton added.

Holly Meads scored 20 points and Mindy Meiggs added 15 points to lead the Lady Bruins, who won 52-48.

Even with the ranking, Camden has a tough road ahead just to win the Albemarle Conference. The Lady Bruins are still smarting from a loss to Perquimans County earlier in the season.

``I feel the top four teams are going to be tight,'' Overton said. ``It's not going to surprise me if we split some games and it comes right down to the end. The splitting has already started. It's up for grabs between Perquimans, Williamston, Northampton East, and us. All of us have started knocking each other off.''

The Lady Bruins will get their second shot at Perquimans in Camden on Tuesday. by CNB
