LUNCHEON SPEAKER USED TO FIGHT ORGANIZED CRIME

New York attorney Laura A. Brevetti , a former Justice Department organized crime fighter, will kick off the 1995 Women's Review Luncheon Series Feb. 9 at the Norfolk Airport Hilton.

The series began in 1991 under the sponsorship of the Central Business District Association to provide professional women in Hampton Roads a forum for networking and for listening to prominent speakers.

Brevetti, now a top defense attorney in New York, began her career as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, then joined the U.S. Justice Department Organized Crime Strike Force in 1980.

While there she helped prosecute white collar, organized crime, corruption, fraud, tax and money laundering cases, including ABSCAM and mob infiltration into labor unions.

She also prosecuted a 12-defendant case that involved the leadership of Teamsters Local 814 and the hierarchy of the Bonano crime family.

Today she heads a team of Park Avenue lawyers who handle white collar and criminal defense cases, commercial litigation and securities arbitrations.

She has taught and lectured at Fordham University Law School, Harvard Law School, New York Law School and the New York State Bar Association, among others.

She is a graduate of Barnard College and the University of Georgetown Law School. She was named New York's best prosecutor by New York Magazine in 1985 and that same year received the Federal Bar Association's Younger Lawyer of the Year Award. In 1989 she received the New York Dewar's Award and in 1993 was named recipient of the DeWitt Clinton Award for distinguished community service.

Reservations are required for Brevetti's luncheon speech.

Former speakers for the series include: Lynda Robb; Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, D-Colo.; actress Janet Leigh; Grace Mirabella of Mirabella Publications; Mary Klette, director of elections and polling for NBC News; Pulitzer Prize-winning author Nan Robertson, who wrote ``The Girls in the Balcony, Women: Men and The New York Times;'' Patricia Kluge; Congresswoman Leslie Byrne, D-Va.; Jean Harris, author of ``Strangers in Two Worlds;'' actress Ellen Burstyn; Cheryl Gould, vice president of NBC News; and Susan Toepfer, executive director of People Magazine.
