SPORTS CLUB TABS CARROLL FOR COACH OF YEAR HONOR

Churchland basketball coach Mac Carroll has been selected as high school coach of the year for 1994 by the Portsmouth Sports Club.

Carroll will be among the award winners at the 49th annual jamboree, scheduled on Wednesday, March 8 at the Holiday Inn-Portside. Principal speaker will be Duke University football coach Fred Goldsmith.

Carroll, 38, led the Truckers to the winningest season in school history. Churchland posted a 25-4 record, capturing its first Eastern Region championship.

Churchland was co-champion of the Southeastern District with Indian River, only the third time the Truckers ever finished atop this league. It was the first district crown in 21 years.

The Truckers bowed out in the state tournament quarterfinals to Petersburg.

After a nine-year stint as head coach at Cradock, Carroll became Churchland's coach in 1992. He steered the Truckers to a 12-8 record in his first season. Churchland had won only eight games the previous two years.

``Any coach knows you can't do it without the players and I want to credit them for it,'' Carroll said. ``This team has really worked, both on the court and in the classroom. We have five on the honor roll.

``Their dedication has been special to me because my mother is terminally ill and the players are giving me much of the same help that I try to give them.

``I'm really excited about this.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo by GARY C. KNAPP
