JOSEPH B. NYE JR.

Joseph Burke (Joe) Nye, Jr. died Friday night, at the age of 74, at his home in Virginia Beach attended by his family. He was born in Bladen County, North Carolina. He served during World War II, earned 8 combat ribbons, and retired from the Navy as a Chief Warrant Electrician. He also retired from Sears Roebuck after twenty years of service. Joe Nye was a 32nd degree Mason of the Quincy, Massachusetts Masonic Lodge and an active member of the Khedive Shrine Hillbillie unit. He was also a member of the Retired Officers Association. Among his many activities, Joe's garden was his pride and the two of them supplied his family and friends with wonderful fruits and vegetables for decades.

Mr. Nye is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lucille Craft Nye; his daughter Linda Nye Huss; his sons, Gary Burke and Joseph David; and four grandchildren, all of Virginia Beach. Also surviving are his three sisters, Louella Sansbury, of Southport, NC; Ruth N. Ferrell, of Clayton, NC; Maude N. McKee, of Lumberton, NC; and his three brothers, Earl, Edd, and Ted, all of Bladen County, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 6, at 1 p.m. at Kellum Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. The Reverend Joseph Carson and Mr. Nye's nephew, the Reverend Tony P. McKee of Greenville, NC, will be presiding. A Masonic service will also be held. The interment will be at Charity Neck Methodist Church Cemetery in Pungo. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled and Burned Children c/o the Khedive Temple 243 W. Freemason Street, Norfolk, VA 23510, and to the wonderful people of the Sentara Hospice Program of Norfolk.
