VA. PHOTOGRAPHER OF YEAR AWARD GOES TO PILOT STAFFER

Motoya Nakamura of The Virginian-Pilot was named Virginia News Photographer of the Year by the Virginia News Photographers Association.

Nakamura was honored Friday night at the association's annual print competition in Richmond.

Best-in-show honors went to another Virginian-Pilot photoghrapher, Tamara Voninski.

The association gave awards in 15 categories to 58 photographers from across the state. There were 540 entries in the competition.

The judges were H. Darr Beiser, a photographer for USA Today; White House staff photographer Callie Shell, and Sam Abell of National Geographic.

about a teenage girl who received a heart transplant, is one of the

images that helped The Virginian-Pilot's Motoya Nakamura earn the

honor of Virginia News Photographer of the Year from the Virginia

News Photographers Association.
