LOCAL WRESTLERS HAVE PLENTY TO DO WITH VIRGINIA MILITARY'S SUCCESS

Virginia Military Institute's wrestling pipeline has found a plentiful source.

The Keydets have 13 area wrestlers on their roster, including six starters. They are led by former state champion Marcus Sanchez (Green Run) at 118 pounds. He is 2-0 in duals. Sanchez recently unseated Frankie Haltom (Great Bridge), a former state champion, for the spot.

Coach John Trudgeon feels it is becoming a tradition at VMI to recruit from South Hampton Roads.

``VMI wrestling means something to these guys,'' Trudgeon said. ``The (local) guys seem to talk to each other about us, and being Division I helps too.''

Brothers Aaron (Green Run) and Adam Mickiewicz (Kellam) are at 126 and 134, respectively. Aaron is 6-1 in duals and Adam is 4-2. Jeremy Ingram (Kellam) is wrestling at 150. Ingram, a former state champion, is 4-2 in duals and also wrestles on occasion at 158.

Deshwan Johnson (Princess Anne), who didn't figure in the preseason plans, is the starter at 177 and is 2-3 in duals. David Hall (Great Bridge) is wrestling in the heavyweight division. Hall weighs slightly more than 200 pounds but took over the division when the previous heavyweight quit the team.

Other local wrestlers: Reese Edgington (Green Run), 16-6 overall at 142; Jason Foresman (Cox), 2-0 in duals at 142; Eric Jones (Princess Anne), 1-0 in duals at 158; Brian Ucciardi (Princess Anne), 2-3 overall at 177; Charles Houk (Great Bridge), 1-0 at heavyweight.

The Keydets are 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference.

MONARCHS REPORT: Old Dominion wrestler Jody Staylor (Great Bridge) was defeated for the first time this season, losing to William and Mary's Khalil Abdul-Malik, 4-3. Staylor, 11-1, had been undefeated since last year's NCAA tournament.

SPARTANS REPORT: Norfolk State's wrestlers finished their dual-meet season at 4-11. Corey Williams (Princess Anne) finished 9-0 at 134 and 5-1 at 142. Creek) finished 6-8 at 158. ... Charles Daniels (First Colonial) was 13-2 at 167. ... At their fall sports banquet, several Spartans were recognized.

MARLINS REPORT: Virginia Wesleyan's men's basketball team will attempt to avenge an earlier loss to Hampden-Sydney as it travels to meet the Tigers on Wednesday. ... Through Feb. 1, Ryan Bradford was leading the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 3-point shooting at 48 percent. ... In the Marlins' win over Washington & Lee, Sean Blackwell (Manor) scored the game-winner with nine seconds to play in double overtime, then blocked a last shot by the Generals with one second left. ... The Lady Marlins were dealt a blow when leading rebounder Ericka Bynum (Manor) quit the team. ... Andrea Beisch (Kempsville) continues to lead the ODAC in free-throw percentage at 84 percent. ... Amy Beisch (Kempsville) is seventh in the ODAC in scoring at 14.5.

CAPTAINS REPORT: Jo-Jo Chambers leads Christopher Newport's men's basketball team in scoring at 20.7 points per game. ... Bayside graduate Eric Vaughan is second at 15.2 points per game. The Captains beat Chowan and Greensboro but lost to Methodist. ... Freshman Keisha Joseph (Salem) is averaging seven points per game off the bench. ... Freshman Tennille Smith (Deep Creek) is fifth in scoring at 7.3 points.

ALUMNI UPDATE: Erin Addesso (Salem) of the Monmouth College women's basketball team netted her 1,000 career point. ... Mary Washington's Ashley Seekford (Churchland) had 12 points and seven rebounds in the Lady Eagles' 71-60 win over Randolph-Macon. ... Mary Washington track performer Myra Simpson (Kellam) finished fourth in the 55 hurdles at 9.2 in the Hagerstown Community College Invitational. ... Roanoke track star J.J. Maybury (Salem) ran a 9:20.5 in the 3000 meter run at the Virginia Tech College Invitational. scored a game-high 29 points in a 75-53 victory over Chicago State. Martin is fourth in the Mid-Continent Conference in scoring at 14.4 points per game, seventh in field goal percentage (.393), sixth in assists (3.9) and tied for twelfth in steals (2.2). ... Swimmer Megan Reese (Kempsville) of Mary Washington qualified for the ``B'' (stand-by) cut for the NCAA Division III Nationals March 9-11 at Middletown, Ct. She was first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:13.91. and first in the breaststroke with a time of 2:31.88 in the Lady Eagles' 117-88 loss at Gettysburg. by CNB
