PENINSULA SHIPYARD STILL IN RUNNING TO BUILD TANKERS

Newport News Shipbuilding is one of six shipyards worldwide waiting to here whether it will build up to three massive double-hull tankers for a Canadian joint venture. The contract could help save jobs at the giant shipyard. Hibernia Lifting, a venture between U.S. and Canadian oil producers, and the Canadian government, plans to use the 120,000-ton vessels to shuttle oil between offshore platforms and the mainland. Shipyard executives offered few details about its bid, which it is making with Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., a giant Korean shipmaker, including whether the ships would even be built in Newport News. Hibernia's could make a decision as early as April. by CNB
