PATRICK J. ROLLINS

Patrick Joseph Rollins, professor of history at Old Dominion University, died March 7, 1995.

Dr. Rollins attained his Ph.D. in history from Syracuse University, his master's and bachelor's degrees from Wayne State University. He taught at Syracuse University from 1960 to 1967. Dr. Rollins joined the faculty at Old Dominion University in 1967, where he had served as graduate program director in both history and international studies. He had been a summer research fellow at the Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Rollins was editor and translator of a four-volume work, Last Tsar: Nicholas II, His Reign and His Russia. He also edited the stenographic record of the First Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR, 25 May--9 June 1989. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, he did research in Russia and presented his papers there. He was one of the first Western scholars to gain access to Russian naval archives. His work in the field of naval history included articles in the Naval War College Review and US Naval Institute Proceedings. His recent focus was the Russo-Japanese War. Dr. Rollins had written extensively for Soviet Armed Forces Review Annual, Modern Encyclopedia of Russian and Soviet History, and Military-Naval Encyclopedia of Russia & the Soviet Union.

Dr. Rollins was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, Southern Conference on Slavic Studies, Southern Historical Association (European History Section), Foundation for the Study of Cycles, and Toastmasters International, and also was a charter member of the Old Dominion Baseball League.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Gallagher Rollins, Norfolk Deputy City Attorney; his daughter, Michele Rollins of Mclean, Va; his son, Patrick Gallagher Rollins of San Francisco, Calif.; and his mother, Josephine C. Rollins of Muskegon, Mich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Painter Street and Newport Avenue. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Old Dominion University Library.
