NECESSARY EVIL: BEES IN SPRING

SPRING MEANS SWARMS of bees. They're a necessary part of spring, needed for proper pollination of flowers, vegetables and fruit. Fruit orchards rent bees from hive owners to provide adequate pollination when fruit trees are in bloom.

Do not spray pesticides when bees are active. Many home gardeners control insects with Sevin, which can be deadly to bees. Use it in early morning or evening when the bees are not flying.

As warm weather arrives, bees often ``swarm.'' This means entire hives may move to the limb of a tree. Leave them alone if you don't want to get stung.

There are professionals who need these beesand will remove them from your property for free. Call Floyd Watkins at Bee and Wasp Eradicator of Tidewater, at 429-3134, and he'll remove honeybees for free. For wasps, hornets, bumblebees or other stinging insects, there is a fee.

Another removal service is Cal Simms at Beekeepers. He removes all types of insect swarms, including bees, for a fee. Call 481-0706. by CNB
