REWARD AT $5,000 IN DEATH OF WOMAN

A $5,000 reward has been posted for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the death of real estate agent Margaret D. Teele, who died Dec. 10 from injuries sustained in an assault eight days earlier.

No arrests have been made in the case.

The Portsmouth/Chesapeake Association of Realtors spearheaded the movement to offer the reward and donated $1,000. Other contributions came from friends and family, Food Lion, the owners and agents of Town Pointe Shopping Center, and Benzie & Associates Ltd., the firm for which Teele worked for many years.

``We were pleased with the response from the Portsmouth Police Department and their concern about this trauma in our lives,'' said Rachel Benzie, with whom Teele was associated for 25 years.

The $5,000 is being offered in addition to the up to $1,000 Crime Line reward.

Teele was attacked in the parking lot of Food Lion on Twin Pines Road in Churchland when she stopped for groceries on her way home from work in the late afternoon of Dec. 2.

As Teele was leaving her car, a young man on a bicycle attempted to grab her pocketbook. When she resisted, she was knocked to the ground by the assailant and suffered a broken hip, broken shoulder and contusions.

A fatal blood clot occurred after Teele was transferred to a Churchland nursing facility to permit healing of her hip before surgery on her shoulder.

Anyone with information in the case can contact Crime Line at 488-7777. ILLUSTRATION: Real estate agent Margaret D. Teele died Dec. 10 from injuries
