GLYNN'S 95-MPH FASTBALL BRINGS MAJOR LEAGUE SCOUTS TO VMI

If he pitches, they come.

Major league scouts, that is.

Ryan Glynn, a righthanded pitcher at Virginia Military Institute, had 45 scouts watching him in his first outing this season in Charleston, S.C. He usually has six to 10 scouts at each game. His fastball has been clocked at 95 mph and he has been approached by every major league team.

But Glynn wasn't always such a dominating force. While he was at Churchland High School, Glynn's fastball was clocked at 80 mph.

``When I came to VMI I weighed 175 pounds,'' Glynn said. ``But in the offseason we had a real intense program running and lifting weights. I put 10 mph on my fastball in two years with three different pitching coaches.''

Glynn, a 1995 team captain, is 2-1 and leads the Keydets in strikeouts with 31 in 25 innings. Glynn also leads the team in hitting at .370 and runs batted in with 16.

The 20-year-old junior is eligible for the 1995 amateur draft because of his junior status. Most likely, he will go as a pitcher.

``I just want to play baseball, and I feel that this is a great opportunity for me,'' said Glynn when asked about the possibility of leaving school early. ``But right now there are certain variables such as the baseball strike. The deal would have to be right for me and my family.''
