JEAN K. MOREHEAD

Jean Louise Klussman Morehead, 74, local harpist and music teacher, died Monday, March 13, 1995.

A native of Topeka, Kan., she was a graduate of the University of Kansas with a bachelor's and a master's degree in music education. Her major instrument at the university was flute, and she was chosen by the noted flutist Georges Barrere for study under him at Woodstock, N.Y. She taught and directed school orchestral, band and vocal music in Kansas and later played harp with the Arkansas Symphony in Little Rock before moving to Raleigh in 1957 with her family.

In Raleigh for 38 years, Mrs. Morehead has taught private students harp, flute and piano and has regularly performed on the harp for civic, social and church functions. The Raleigh Harp Ensemble Festival, in which two dozen local professional and student harpists have performed together each May for the past 12 years, was established by and has been sponsored and conducted annually by Mrs. Morehead. She maintained her professional schedule until her death, having continued her teaching through the previous Friday, and on Saturday having judged a harp competition in Charlotte held by its chapter of the American Harp Society. Among her students have been winners in national and international competitions and the harpist in the Toronto Symphony.

Mrs. Morehead was the widow of Dr. Charles Galloway Morehead. Survivors include two sons, John Morehead of Edenton, N.C., and Allan Morehead of New York and Saudi Arabia.

The funeral was Wednesday, March 15, from the Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, with harp and flute music by Mrs. Morehead's students and colleagues, and interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
